More than Minimal

Minimal works can be so restful, a way to make a statement, yet ensure your space is serene. The paintings, photos and sculptures in this week’s exhibition do that and a little bit more. With a reduced colour palette or understated composition, each piece may seem minimal at first glance, but give it a moment and see how the tension between collaged elements start to reverberate, or how that seemingly simplistic form is made of countless complex strokes.

About Screen Time

With the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, we’ve moved the annual Artist Project show to a nine-week series of online exhibitions, running April 1 - June 2, 2021. Every Thursday at noon, a new themed exhibition launches featuring seven artists with a daily artist feature on our social media channels. From painting and drawing, to sculpture, prints and photography, the shows will support an incredible breadth of work, all available for sale directly from the artists.  During this time when we’re spending so much time at home, consider supporting an independent artist and treating yourself to a fresh perspective with an original work of art.

Based in printmaking and drawing, Heather J. A. Thomson's practice is amalgamation of her passion for history and her desire to use a visual language. Thomson feels discussions of hyperinflation Germany focus on statistics and disregard the physicality of currency. The Papiermark was used by people during the inflation and she believes the banknotes are objects with stories to tell. Through interacting with her pieces, Heather invites viewers to observe minute details and hopes Papiermarks can move beyond their statistical value.

Lori Ryerson is an opportunistic photographer, whose compositions are usually the result of serendipity. She seeks out mysteries in the mundane, and watches for stories to reveal themselves in landscapes. In an increasingly noisy world dominated by digital connections, Ryerson's work gives the viewer a chance to embrace silence.

Hannan Fayad is a glass artist working in a unique sculptural style. Her work highlights the diverse possibilities of glass with forms that balance geometry, organic shapes and colour. The way natural forces of erosion transmute a surface and play with the symmetry of a form influence her compositions and carving technique.
